Super Mario’s 2027 minifigures open the door to a different kind of adventure
The announced January range shifts the focus toward character-led play, from kart racing to a day at Mario’s house.
A familiar world changes scale
LEGO’s August 26 reveal at gamescom introduced a Super Mario range centered on minifigure roleplay, with release planned for January 1, 2027. The announcement covers recognizable characters, karts and settings, giving collectors a new format to follow as the Nintendo partnership develops.
This is a preview of announced products, not a report that they are on sale today. The interesting question is what the smaller characters allow builders to do: place Mario and friends inside compact scenes, arrange a conversation or invent a detour between the familiar game-like challenges.
Remember where the partnership began
The original 2020 range was built around an interactive Mario figure. LEGO’s launch information described screens in his eyes, mouth and belly, a speaker and action bricks used to trigger responses as players moved him through physical courses and collected virtual coins.
That history helps explain the significance of the new direction. The original format made the character a responsive part of a game course. Minifigure roleplay invites a different emphasis: the person holding the figure can supply the dialogue and decide what happens next. These are different play ideas, and a family may enjoy either or both.
The announced scenes leave room between the races
Two examples show the range’s variety. Mario’s Beach Adventures 72055 includes a refreshment stand and a Mario character in swimming shorts. Yoshi at Mario’s House 72057 offers domestic rooms and a slide between floors. The announcement also includes racing sets and a castle adventure.
Our view is that the everyday settings are particularly promising for small stories. A beach stop or a visit to a house can be extended with a few familiar objects from a builder’s collection. The model supplies a recognizable starting place without requiring every imagined event to be a race or a battle.
Collect by the scene you want to create
For minifigure fans, a practical approach is to start with a favorite character and the setting you would actually enjoy arranging. Keep a list of exact set numbers and compare the included figures as final product information becomes available. A costume variation can matter more to one collector than a larger surrounding build.
There is no need to predict future resale values to appreciate this development. The immediate attraction is creative: familiar characters are becoming available in a format that invites more little scenes. We will reserve judgments about handling, construction and play features until there is evidence beyond the announcement.
