Shrek’s LEGO debut brings three characters together at two building scales

The 1,403-piece Shrek display combines a movable ogre and donkey with a small Puss in Boots, while BrickHeadz offers a different cast.

A scene built around the friendship

Shrek, Donkey & Puss in Boots, set 72423, mixes two kinds of LEGO character in one swamp scene. Shrek and Donkey are substantial brick-built figures, while Puss in Boots appears as a minifigure. The difference is visible immediately in the official photography: the ogre supplies the broad central shape, Donkey brings a tall face beside him, and the little cat adds a much smaller accent.

LEGO announced the model in April 2026 as part of the film franchise’s 25th-anniversary celebration, with a June 1 launch. The scene includes the familiar warning sign and references such as the onion and blue flower with red thorns. This is a look at an already released set, rather than a new launch announcement.

Expressions extend beyond the face

The official product listing specifies movement in Shrek’s head, arms, hands and fingers. Donkey’s head turns, his mouth opens, and his ears and tail can be repositioned. Those are meaningful choices for a pair whose relationship is often expressed through a glance or reaction. A slight change in which way they face can suggest whether they are addressing each other or posing for the viewer.

The 1,403-piece model measures over 24 cm high. LEGO also confirms hidden references inside Shrek’s stomach. That gives the builder something the eventual shelf viewer may not see: a second, private layer of recognition beneath the completed exterior.

The smaller alternative changes the cast

The companion BrickHeadz set 40923 includes Shrek, Donkey and Gingy. Its current product page describes printed elements on all three figures and the warning sign in Shrek’s hand. Gingy takes the place occupied by Puss in Boots in the larger scene, so the two boxes are different selections of characters as well as different construction styles.

Our reading of the designs is that BrickHeadz emphasizes recognition across a collection: similar proportions allow three very different characters to belong together. The larger model instead uses their unequal sizes and moving features to suggest an interaction. Neither approach needs a complete swamp building to establish the setting.

That makes 72423 an interesting character display rather than a miniature film location. Its most important space is the gap between the ogre and his companion, where a changed pose can create a different exchange. This assessment is based on published specifications and photographs; we have not tested the joints or judged their long-term stability.
