An anniversary remembered through play

When LEGO presented Lion Knights’ Castle 10305 at LEGO CON in June 2022, the anniversary celebration came with working defenses and ways around them. The 4,514-piece model paired a drawbridge and portcullis with hidden passages, dungeon escapes and a turning waterwheel.

That combination is the interesting part of this desk retrospective. A castle can look formidable, yet its mechanisms invite the builder to change what happens next. The anniversary model celebrated a familiar kind of LEGO play through actions as well as appearances. Our assessment is based on official documentation and photography, without hands-on testing.

The castle contains a community

LEGO says the design followed an Ideas-platform poll with more than 55,000 respondents. The official product page lists 22 minifigures, including a queen, knights, archers, a wizard and forest people. Alongside the defenses are living quarters, an armory and a mill. The structure opens to reveal its interior, while the dungeon trapdoor and secret passage provide routes for capture and escape.

Our reading is that these details support several stories at once. Guarding an entrance, operating the mill and slipping out of confinement place different demands on the same building. The rooms explain why characters would be there; the passages connect those activities into an adventure.

A return to an adaptable theme

LEGO’s own history traces Castle through multiple reinventions, including Knights’ Kingdom, the fantasy-rich 2007 Castle range and later Kingdoms. It describes the 2022 anniversary model as an effort to recover the classic theme’s spirit.

That history helps explain why a broad cast matters. A medieval setting can accommodate rival factions, ordinary work and a little magic without requiring one fixed plot. The anniversary castle gives returning fans recognizable ingredients while leaving the sequence of events open to them.

Why the small actions matter

For collectors reconsidering this model, the useful question is which kind of interaction they enjoy. The official feature list emphasizes opening, closing, turning and escaping. Those verbs describe a building meant to be revisited after assembly.

A gate creates a decision about entry. An escape route changes a seemingly finished story. A mill suggests life continuing between adventures. That is the lasting appeal of this design: its architecture offers reasons to return and move the characters again.
